The 5-Minute Habit That Could Change Your Health
Your period is telling you more about your health than you probably realize.
Here's something we think everyone in their fertile years (regular period or not!) deserves to know: your cycle is one of the most valuable health metrics you have access to. Not just for getting pregnant or preventing it, but for everything. It can tell you about your stress levels, your nutritional status, your thyroid function, your hormone balance, and whether your body feels supported enough to ovulate (which, as we covered earlier this summer, is the main event).
And yet, most of us were taught to track exactly one thing: when our period starts. That's like reading the last page of a book and thinking you got the whole story. There's so much more information available to you, and once you start paying attention, things that used to feel random start making a lot more sense.
Understanding your cycle (the basics)
Your cycle has four phases, and each one comes with its own hormonal profile, energy shifts, and physical signs.
Menstrual phase (days ~1-5) - Day 1 is the first day of your period (not spotting). Estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest. Energy tends to be lower and your body is focused on shedding the uterine lining.
Follicular phase (days ~1-14) -This overlaps with menstruation and extends beyond it. Estrogen is rising, energy is building, and your body is preparing to ovulate. You might notice improved mood, sharper focus, and more motivation during this window.
Ovulatory phase (around day ~14) - Estrogen peaks, luteinizing hormone surges, and your ovary releases an egg. This is when many people feel their best: highest energy, strongest libido, most social. It's also the only way your body produces meaningful amounts of progesterone.
Luteal phase (days ~15-28) - Progesterone rises (if you ovulated), estrogen has a smaller secondary peak, and your body is in a more inward, maintenance-focused mode. Energy may dip, you might need more food and more rest, and PMS symptoms can show up if hormones aren't well balanced.
Technically, a textbook cycle is 28 days, but anywhere from 24-35 days is considered normal. What matters more than hitting a specific number is consistency. If your cycle is roughly the same length most months, that's a good sign.
Is your cycle irregular?
Irregular can mean a lot of things, and it's worth getting specific about what you're experiencing:
- Cycles shorter than 24 days or longer than 35 days on a regular basis
- Cycles that vary by more than 7-9 days from month to month
- Skipped periods (when you're not pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding)
- Bleeding that lasts 7+ days can all point to something worth investigating.
Common drivers of irregular cycles? Chronic stress, under-eating, overexercising, thyroid dysfunction, PMOS, coming off hormonal birth control, and perimenopause. Unfortunately, the sky’s the limit. If your cycle has been irregular for more than 3-4 months, don’t fret. Consider it feedback to bring up with your doctor because the pattern itself is useful diagnostic information.
What to track (and how)
You don't need a fancy app to do this well, though apps can make it easier! If you wear an Oura ring, you likely know it can track your cycle, too. Devices aside, a simple notebook works too. Here's what's worth paying attention to:

Cycle length. Count from day 1 of one period to day 1 of the next. Track this for at least 3-4 months to see if a pattern emerges. This alone gives you valuable information about whether you're likely ovulating and how long your luteal phase is.

Period length and flow. How many days does your period last? How heavy is it? Soaking through a pad or tampon every 1-2 hours, passing large clots regularly, or bleeding for 7+ days can indicate excess estrogen, low progesterone, fibroids, or other underlying factors. On the flip side, very light or very short periods can signal low estrogen or anovulation. This is information worth having and sharing with your provider!

Basal body temperature (BBT). This is your resting body temperature taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed. Before ovulation, BBT tends to be lower (around 97.0-97.5°F). After ovulation, progesterone causes a sustained rise of about 0.2-0.5 degrees that stays elevated until your period arrives. If you see that consistent rise, it's a strong confirmation that ovulation occurred. No rise? That could mean anovulation, which is worth exploring. A simple basal thermometer or a wearable like makes this easy to track over time.

Cervical mucus. This one may feel awkward at first, but it's one of the most reliable real-time indicators of where you are in your cycle. After your period, mucus is typically dry or minimal. As estrogen rises heading toward ovulation, it becomes wetter, stretchy, and clear (often compared to raw egg whites). That egg-white consistency is your body's signal that ovulation is approaching! After ovulation, progesterone causes mucus to become thicker, stickier, or dry again. Noticing these changes takes a few cycles of practice, but once you know what to look for, it becomes second nature.
Bonus: Track how you feel throughout your cycle. Energy levels, mood shifts, sleep quality, cravings, bloating, breast tenderness, skin changes, anxiety. When you start mapping these against your cycle phases, patterns emerge that can help you anticipate what's coming and support yourself accordingly rather than being caught off guard every month.
Why this all matters
Tracking your cycle isn't about obsessing over data. It's about building body literacy. When you understand what's happening hormonally at each phase, you can eat in a way that supports it (more carbs and lighter meals during the follicular phase when you're more insulin sensitive, more protein and grounding meals during the luteal phase when your metabolic rate increases). You can adjust your training. You can anticipate when you'll need more rest, more magnesium, more patience with yourself.
It also gives you something incredibly powerful: the ability to notice when something changes. A suddenly shorter luteal phase, a heavier period, a cycle that keeps getting longer, etc. These shifts are early signals that something in your body has shifted, and catching them early means you can address them before they become bigger problems.
Where seed cycling fits in
Seed cycling is built on this same principle of working with your cycle rather than ignoring it.
- Phase 1 (flax and pumpkin seeds during the follicular phase) supports estrogen metabolism and provides the zinc needed for ovulation.
- Phase 2 (sesame and sunflower seeds during the luteal phase) supports progesterone production and helps keep estrogen balanced.
When you're tracking your cycle, you know exactly when to switch phases, and over time you can see whether seed cycling is shifting your symptoms, your cycle length, or your luteal phase experience. The tracking and the seed cycling reinforce each other.
Start simple
Rest assured, you don't have to track everything at once. Start with cycle length and period flow for a couple of months. Add BBT or cervical mucus when you're ready! Note how you feel at different points in your cycle. Over time, you'll start to see your body not as unpredictable, but as incredibly consistent in its communication.
