10 Blood Sugar Tips That Work

Stable blood sugar is the foundation your whole body runs on.

Blood sugar is one of those topics that sounds like it only matters if you have diabetes. But here's the truth: blood sugar regulation affects everyone, every single day. It influences your energy, your mood, your cravings, your sleep, your focus, your hormones, and your body composition. We've touched on it in almost every newsletter this year (estrogen, PMS, cramps, PMOS, anxiety!) because it's that fundamental. When glucose is stable, everything else works better. With that in mind, today we're rounding up the tips that are evidence-based and equal parts practical. 

Why blood sugar matters (even if you’re healthy)

Every time you eat, your blood sugar rises. In turn, your body releases insulin to bring it back down. This is totally normal. The problem is when this process becomes a roller coaster: big spikes followed by sharp crashes, repeated multiple times a day. Over time, these swings can lead to insulin resistance (where your cells stop responding to insulin as efficiently), increased fat storage, more intense cravings, hormonal disruption, and chronic inflammation.

How do you know if your blood sugar is well regulated?

You don't necessarily need to wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to get a sense of how well your body is handling blood sugar. Your symptoms can offer clues, but blood work gives you a much clearer picture of what's happening beneath the surface! If you're curious about your blood sugar regulation, there are a few key markers worth knowing via blood work:

  1. Fasting blood glucose: This measures your blood sugar after fasting for at least eight hours. A fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL is considered normal. A result of 100–125 mg/dL falls into the prediabetes range, while 126 mg/dL or higher is in the diabetes range and typically requires repeat testing for confirmation.

  2. A1C: Your A1C reflects your average blood sugar levels over roughly the past two to three months. An A1C below 5.7% is considered normal, 5.7–6.4% falls into the prediabetes range, and 6.5% or higher is in the diabetes range, generally requiring confirmation.

  3. Fasting insulin: This measures how much insulin your body is producing while fasting. Unlike fasting glucose and A1C, there isn't one universally accepted cutoff that defines a "normal" or "optimal" fasting insulin level. However, it can provide additional context because your body may produce more insulin to keep your blood sugar in the normal range. In other words, you can have a normal fasting glucose and A1C while your body is already working harder than it should to maintain them!

Of course, your day-to-day experience can also offer clues. Frequent energy crashes, strong cravings for sweets or refined carbs, feeling shaky or irritable when you haven't eaten, or needing to snack constantly may be signs that your meals aren't keeping you as satiated or metabolically stable as you'd like. These symptoms aren't diagnostic on their own, but they can be a reason to take a closer look at your eating patterns and discuss your concerns with your healthcare provider.

The 10 tips that work

1. Eat protein at every meal (and eat it first). This is probably the single most impactful thing you can do. Protein slows the absorption of glucose into your bloodstream, which means a gentler rise and a softer landing. Research has shown that eating protein and vegetables before carbohydrates in a meal can reduce the post-meal glucose spike by up to 73%. Aim for 25-30 grams of protein per meal. Eggs, Greek yogurt, chicken, fish, legumes, cottage cheese, tofu. And when you sit down to eat, start with the protein and veggies on your plate before the bread or the rice. The order genuinely matters.

2. Pair your carbs. Ideally, always! Carbs aren't the enemy (your brain runs on glucose, your hormones need them, your serotonin production depends on them). But carbs eaten alone, without protein, fat, or fiber alongside them, will spike blood sugar faster. A banana by itself? Quick spike. A banana with almond butter and a scoop of beeya seeds? Much steadier. The pairing is the strategy.

3. Walk after meals. A 10-15 minute walk after eating can lower your post-meal blood sugar by 30% or more. Your muscles are using glucose for fuel as you move, which helps clear it from the bloodstream without requiring as much insulin. This is one of the most well-studied, lowest-effort interventions in all of blood sugar research. It doesn't have to be intense. A casual stroll around the block or even pacing while you take a phone call counts. Can’t go for a walk? Try a couple minutes of bodyweight squats or do some light house chores.

4. Don't skip breakfast. When you skip breakfast (or go too long without eating in the morning), your body compensates by raising cortisol to mobilize stored glucose. That cortisol spike can set off a cascade that makes blood sugar harder to regulate for the rest of the day. 5. Add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before meals. This one has solid research behind it. Acetic acid (the active compound in ACV) has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce post-meal glucose spikes. A tablespoon diluted in water 15-20 minutes before a meal is the typical protocol used in studies. It's not magic, but it's a simple, low-cost tool that can support what you're already doing.

6. Prioritize fiber. Soluble fiber (oats, beans, lentils, chia seeds, flaxseeds) forms a gel-like substance in your gut that slows glucose absorption. 7. Stop fearing fat. Dietary fat slows gastric emptying, which means food (including glucose) enters your bloodstream more gradually. Avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds, full-fat dairy, and egg yolks all contribute to a slower, steadier blood sugar response when included in meals. The low-fat era did a lot of damage here, unfortunately! Your hormones need fat. Your blood sugar needs fat. Bring them back!

8. Manage your stress. Cortisol directly raises blood sugar. That's its job in a fight-or-flight scenario: flood the bloodstream with glucose for quick energy. But when cortisol is chronically elevated (from work stress, sleep deprivation, emotional overwhelm, overtraining), blood sugar stays elevated too, even if your diet is dialed in. Deep breathing, walking, phone-free time, and consistent sleep aren't simply nice-to-haves. They're blood sugar interventions.

9. Get enough sleep. Even one night of poor sleep has been shown to reduce insulin sensitivity by up to 25% the following day. When you're sleep deprived, your body requires more insulin to manage the same amount of glucose, and cravings for high-sugar, high-carb foods increase. Prioritizing 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep is one of the most overlooked blood sugar strategies. 10. Eat enough overall. Under-eating and restrictive diets can actually worsen blood sugar regulation over time.
